Allergic contact cheilitis

MUDr.Iva Karlová
Klinika chorob kožních a pohlavních LF a FN Olomouc

Allergic contact cheilitis (ACC) is an inflammatory condition of the lips resulting from the development of contact sensitization to a specific

substance (a specific allergen). Epicutaneous tests are the basic examination method used to diagnose contact sensitization. The author

reports three cases of allergic contact cheilitis. Nickel contained in an orthodontic appliance was the cause of the disease in one case. In

one case, allergic contact cheilitis resulted from applying propolis tincture and in one from using lip balm. In all the cases, sensitization

was confirmed by positive epicutaneous tests and healing occurred after exposure to the allergen had been avoided.
