Retinoids in Dermatology

Retinoids are a class of chemical compounds that are related chemically to vitamin A. They are both oral and topical formulations and are used to treat dermatological conditions such as acne, psoriasis or other keratinizing disorders. Retinoids work by binding to specific receptors which then interact with DNA. This process generates new molecules which in turn results in skin improvements. Retinoids have multiple actions. They are involved in the control of cell proliferation, cell differentiation, and embryonic development. The most serious side effects are teratogenity and toxicity, so retinoids are contraindicated in pregnancy. There are three generations of retinoids.
