The absolute number of reported syphilis cases has been increasing in the Czech Republic in the last three years. From the epidemiologic
point of view, the increasing incidence of early stages of the disease is alarming. Men prevail over women among the infected persons; the
number of homosexual men has been increasing in the last three years. This trend confirms the importance of contact-tracing, HIV and
syphilis testing and the potential negative consequences of the failure to perform anti-treponemal antibody screening during the first
hospitalization in the given year, which is no longer required by Czech legislation. The number of reported gonorrhoea cases is much
lower than the real incidence. This can be caused by inconsistency when issuing the compulsory reports, treatment without a targeted
venereological examination or self-treatment.
