Emollients are products for external use that aid in maintaining or restoring proper function of the epidermal barrier. They are commonly
referred to as moisturizers; their name is derived from the Latin emollire, to soften. They lubricate, hydrate, and supple the skin, thus
becoming an important part of treatment for chronic skin conditions, and are also used in preventing the development of skin conditions.
