Herpes zoster is an acute segmentary disease with skin and neurologic signs of a typical clinical presentation, caused by varicellazoster virus (Alphaherpesviridae). It occures as a reactivation of a dormant viral infection. Reactivation is provoked by variousstimuli such as age, other disease, immunosuppressive therapy etc. Especially in immunosuppresed persons it may be associatedwith serious or life-threatening complications. While it is localisated on head, other various complications may occure. The occularinvolvment may be severe. Also in immunocompetent persons and in common clinical presentation it is unpleasant and painfuldisease. The postherpetic neuralgia is a rather often late complication which has a signifficant negative impact on quality of life. The therapy must be complex. Systemic antivirotics are used.Sometimes interdisciplinary care is necessary. Nowadays the active immunisation by vaccination is available.
