Photodermatoses

Photodermatoses are classified (characterized) as a group of skin diseases initiated by solar UV radiation. Their ethiopathogenesis is varied, not always fully clarified or known (idiopathic photodermatoses). Often they are caused by effect of drugs, applied either externally or internally, by cosmetics or some environmental substances in combination with solar UV radiation. Oxidative stress has been thought as an important triggering factor related to preexisting down regulation of reactions scavenging free oxygen radicals. To the most frequent units belong: polymorphous light eruptions, chronic actinic dermatitis and hydroa vacciniforme, which is predominant in childhood. Therapy of photodermatoses is not an easy one. Minimizing the solar exposure or avoiding it completely is an inevitable prerequisite for a final therapeutic success. Further, in case of any kind of solar exposure, usage of sunscreens with high protective UVB and UVA factors must be recommended.
