Allergic reactions to gold

Klinika chorob kožních a pohlavních LF UP a FN Olomouc

The increasing frequency of sensitization to gold especially in developed countries was noticed recently. The sources of sensitization

are except for jewelry, dental materials and oral gold treatment also intracoronary Au stents and other implants. The papular dermatitis

is the most common clinical picture especially on the face, eyelids, near the ears and on the hands. Typical lichenoid lesions on the oral

mucous membranes or nonspecific stomatitis are frequently seen. Gold sodium thiosulfate 2% in petrolatum is recommended for patch

tests with subsequent reading of skin reactions on day 2 and day 3 of exposure, with follow-up on day 7.
