Onychomycosis is a mycotic infection of a nail apparatus by microscopic fungi.
Clinical presentation is discoloration, hyperkeratosis and detachment of nail plate from the nail. The disease could cause serious complication
in immunocompromised patients.
The main diagnostic methods are KOH preparation, fungal cultivation and eventually histology.
Systematic therapy is still the most effective therapy in combination with debridement. Recently laser therapy is used in some clinics.
One of the possible approaches could be photodynamic therapy, which is not used yet and other studies are needed.
