Emollients or moisturiziers (from Latin emollio = to soften) are products used for softening, moisturizing and smoothing the skin, adjustingthe pH of the skin, hydrating and regenerating, and are therefore particularly important in skin barrier renewal. Patients withatopic dermatitis (AD) have damaged epidermal barrier, therefore emollients are essential terapeutic approach in the complex solutionof this disease. The article is also focused on the right choice of the emollience with respect to specific patient not only according tothe stage of the disease, localization, amount and cosmetic acceptability, but also according to the active substances and mechanismof their effect. People with AD have a higher risk of the irritation and contact sensitization because of the disturbed epidermal barrier. As a result, attention is also paid to preservatives, emulsifiers and antioxidants in dermatological and cosmetic products.
