For many decades tars have been used for the treatment of various skin disorders. The article presents the current view on this re-established topical agent. The results of long term trials focused particularly on the management of psoriasis and atopic eczema confirm that the coal tar is an effective and safe topical modality. Carcinogenicity of pharmaceutical coal tar was not verified in epidemiological studies.

Acne is one of the most frequent skin disease. Prevalence of acne in adolescent is between 50–95%. It takes many various forms, ranging from minimal manifestations to severe extensive involvement of the facial and truncal skin. Acne usually subsides by 25 years of age, but in a small proportion of cases it may persist until adulthood. A well-chosen and regular topical treatment leads to suppressing the manifestations of the disease in the majority of cases.

Dermatological phototherapy uses ultraviolet, visible and infrared radiation in various indications. Phototherapy can be administered locally or whole body irradiation is employed. Recently, lasers are being used increasingly. Types of phototherapy, indications and its combinations with other therapies are reviewed in the article. Side effects of phototherapy, which are distinguished as acute (sunburning) and chronic (photoaging, photocarcinogenesis) are also discussed.

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease that affects 2–3% of population. Nail psoriasis occurs in up to 50% of psoriatic patiens. In this article a casuistics of a 32-year-old man with a formation on glans penis is presented. The patient reported its duration for only one month before visiting our department; he negated any other pathology before its arising. Most common sexual transmitted diseases including HPV infection were excluded. A histological examination brought a diagnosis of verrucous carcinoma. A total excision of the tumour was done.
