Ultraviolet radiation contained in the solar spectrum can damage children's skin by acute burns, but it can also trigger changes leading to adulthood skin cancer. The amount of sun exposure depends on the intensity and duration of the exposure, the time of day and season, the geographical location and altitude, the mode of activity, as well as the age and phototype of the child. UV protection consists of staying in the shade, wearing photoprotective clothes and applying sunscreens to unprotected skin. Sun-damaged skin should be treated as a burn with prevention further sun exposure.

Atopic dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease with a gradually increasing incidence and prevalence in the population. Depending on the severity of the skin manifestations, it is accompanied by varying degrees of mental disorders and their understanding is essential for a comprehensive approach to the treatment of patients, including psychodermatological care. Equally important is the somatization of mental health problems, which we encounter more and more often in our practice and it is necessary to take them into account. Thanks to new treatment modalities, we are now able not only to relieve patients of their skin symptoms, or to completely...

Diseases of the scalp are a common problem encountered by dermatologists. Due to the chronic course of these conditions, the goal is to provide treatment which is not only effective and safe in the long term, but also well tolerated by the patient. In this respect, a well-chosen combination of local therapy and scalp care may be the key to success. It is the patient's tolerance to treatment and its cosmetic acceptability that are among the main pitfalls that often hinder successful treatment. The article presents an overview of selected diseases of the scalp and their treatment, taking into account efficacy in terms of daily care.

Patients with psoriasis suffer from a variety of comorbidities, arising from both direct and indirect causes. These comorbidities are very heterogeneous, ranging from metabolic, to cardiovascular, to other autoimmune diseases. Some comorbidities may also be drug-induced. Therefore, the choice of systemic therapy, including biologic therapy, must take into account possible comorbidities, especially because of possible contraindications or, conversely, possible common therapeutic use

Ingrown and curved toenails are among common lower limb problems in both children and adults. They may lead to painful complications and, not uncommonly, to permanent changes in the nail bed and lateral nail folds. The big toe is affected most commonly, although the problem may occur in all toes. A number of procedures have been described for correcting toenails, using either conservative or surgical approaches. Paediatricians are typically the first contact for patients suffering from toenail problems. These can be acute, resulting from a one-off improper nail trimming procedure or injury, and chronic which the parents of young patients are usually...

Maskne is defined as acne, which newly emerged or worsened in connection with a usage of face protection equipment (FPE). It is a form of mechanic acne developed as a result of permanent contact and friction between textiles and skin. A prolonged usage of FPE causes in addition a hot and humid microclimate on a skin surface, which modifies a sebum production and subsequently a microbial balance is impaired. Maskne is situated on an area covered by FPE or in an "O" zone, more often on a chin than on cheeks. Most often mild forms of acne are present with papules, comedones and seborrhoea. More severe forms (big papules, nodules) are caused by worsening...

The interconnection between dermatology and medical genetics is significant. Medical genetics and molecular biology nowadays enable diagnosis and genetic prevention for a wide range of genodermatoses. This includes the area of rare diseases, the ethical and legal implications of genetic counselling and genetic diagnosis, including prenatal and pre-implantation testing procedures. In this article, we report on current options for genetic testing of genodermatoses and recommended procedures.

Pandemic HIV/AIDS infection is still a global problem. The infection is mainly among men in the Czech Republic but in recent years the disease has increased among women as well. Dermatological problems are common in people living with HIV and often lead to the diagnosis of this infection. We present the procedure for the investigation of anti-HIV antibodies and a list of health and epidemiological situations in which it is appropriate to examine these antibodies and a list of HIV centers. The occurrence of typical symptoms is reported depending on the stage of the disease. Finally, we focus on prophylaxis by administering antiretrovirals after a risk...

Fungal skin diseases belong to the most common infectious disorders of the skin. Diagnosis and therapy of superficial fungal skin infections may sometimes become difficult in certain population groups such as in childhood. We describe the case of a 2-year old girl with tinea corporis including clinical picture, differential diagnostic considering, cultivation finding of Trichophyton interdigitale/Trichophyton mentagrophytes and therapy. We summarize current literature recommendations of topical and systemic antifungal treatment of this entity in children.

Thanks to hormonal therapy and unique surgical conversion, the number of treated transsexual patients is gradually increasing. Gender dysphoria or transgenderism can be characterized as a feeling of subjectively perceived discomfort associated with a disagreement between the gender identity and biological sex. Compared to other diagnoses, there is only a fraction of transsexuals, but even these people can visit a dermatovenerologic clinic with their diseases. The case report describes generalized skin manifestations in an 18-years-old patient in the initial phase of hormonal therapy.

Acne and demodicosis are dermatoses with a similar clinical picture and a similar course. They even affect the same structures in the skin and, with a few exceptions, similar skin localities. Sometimes their symptoms may overlap in the same patient. However, the causative pathogen, the etiology of the disease, the main age group of the patients and basal effective treatment differ. Distinguishing between the two diseases in the routine outpatient setting may not be easy, especially in the examination of unremarkable to discrete lesions. This case report presents the case of a 39-year-old man who had long suffered from mild but recurrent facial papulopustular...
